A life-changing brush with cancer

By Carl Munson

Having received some shock news following a biopsy, Essex-based plasterer and father of three Nick Richardson was forced to weigh up the treatment options and make some important decisions...

"It was early August when I received a call from my dermatologist inviting me in for a biopsy. The urgency in her voice made me fear the worst and I put two and two together," said Nick, recounting this terrifying twist in the course of his life.

"It had all begun with a mole on my chest that I'd had for as long as can remember. Like I'd heard before with other stories of skin cancer, sun bathing had caused it to change colour and it had started to come away from my body.

"On my wife Denise's suggestion, I went to my doctor and had it removed. But within a few weeks the consultant called to say I'd better drop in for a biopsy - quick. She told me I really needed to come in, so I arranged an appointment and prepared for the worst.

"My fears were confirmed soon after, when the procedure, carried out under local anaesthetic, later showed up cancerous cells in my chest area." added Nick.

Needless to say, a subsequent appointment with an oncologist was arranged and Nick was offered further surgery to assess the possible spread of cancer to the rest of his body. With his initial scar healing well, Nick was faced with the option of a CT scan and another surgical investigation that could lead to the removal of a lymph node in his armpit.

"It was at this time that my wife happened to mention my situation to an alternative practitioner who runs a weekly group in Essex," explained Nick, who eventually refused the possibility of lymph node removal, wary of taking the surgery route to solve his health problem.

"I went to see the alternative man, who told me about a whole range of natural approaches including a far infrared machine, apricot kernels and pancreatic enzymes, which I decided I would try. I just got on with it and didn't put up any barriers," recalled Nick.

According to Carl Munson, a natural health practitioner who supplied Nick with the far infrared 'Hot House' specially imported from Australia, this approach is regarded by many in the complementary field as an excellent way to detoxify and cleanse the body, whilst offering pain relief and deep relaxation.

"I take the view that the body generally has the capacity to heal and rebuild itself, but only if it is given the right conditions like good nutrition, enough pure water and an absence of toxins," adds Carl. "And as long as intervention is not left too late."

As well as daily far infrared treatment, Nick embarked on a revolutionary nutritional regime including the apricot kernels, which are thought to fight cancer cells, as well as high dose vitamin C, selenium, sea kelp, shark cartilage, 'Goji' berries, pumpkin seeds and cocoa nibs.

"At first, I mega-dosed the apricot kernels and mixed handfuls of the berries and seeds to make a healthy 'Bombay mix', said Nick. "With the help of Denise doing loads of research on the Internet and talking to complementary practitioners, I've totally changed the way I eat and gone organic. I've reduced red meat, eating chicken and fish instead and I've also given up coffee and alcohol completely."

Despite being offered a further surgical procedure recently to check the spread of cancer, Nick has turned down any more conventional treatment. Having been given the 'all-clear' on two occasions, since taking the alternative route, he is choosing to maintain the healthy lifestyle he has created, rather than rely on drugs, chemicals or surgery.

"I believe the far infrared helped me beat the cancer alongside the apricot kernels and a change in the way I eat and live. If I hadn't taken the route I chose I don't know where I'd be right now," says Nick, whose life has been transformed by the whole experience. He's even looking at a new direction in life, based on the idea that this has "all happened for a reason."

"I meet other people who have been given a cancer diagnosis and try and help without telling them what to do. I just tell them what I did and let them decide for themselves," adds Nick, munching on apricot kernels, which are now an established part of his new healthy lifestyle.
